I visited my sister in the UK back in June. My sister often used a hand knitted vintage tea cosy on her tea pot when she made a pot of tea. I was surprised to find out that the tea cosy really did keep the tea piping hot. My sister knowing how much I love vintage knitting patterns gave me a vintage flutted tea cosy pattern from the 1940's?
As soon as I got back to the California, I started the tea cosy project. Every girl must have a tea cosy, right? I decided to use acrylic yarn because the tea does spill and can stain so I wanted a tea cosy that I could throw in the wash and be really practical. I used a bright red and pink yarn. I wanted something very cheery. I think I achieved that!
The pattern is so clever, the cosy doesn't need lining as the lining is created as you knit the second color of yarn that is pulled behind the work to create strands that act as the lining.
Although the pattern I used I adapted from the vintage knitting pattern. I have found various patterns almost identical to the one I knitted. Fiber Trends has one that you can purchase.
I think this is one of the first times I knitted something for the home? I enjoy looking at my cheery cosy and making that first cup of morning tea, with the cheerful cosy that greets me each morning, brewing the tea then pouring it out to enjoy that first hot, strong cup of tea..ooh!
I am enjoying the product of all that embarrassment of knitting the cosy in public. Every time someone asked me what I was knitting. I tried to answer with general "a home decor item" and my girls would always correct me, in public with an innocent " oh no, Mum's knitting a tea cozy". The reply was always a bemused, "Em. Well, its very pretty?!!!"
